There are two common water production processes for reverse osmosis softened water equipment:

The reverse osmosis softening water equipment produces both pure water and softened water, because the water that passes through the reverse osmosis system is also softened water. The purpose of adding softening is mostly to prevent premature membrane blockage when the conductivity of the raw water and calcium and magnesium ions are high.
Due to the high content of calcium and magnesium ions in the raw water, also known as hard water, in order to reduce the hardness of the raw water, reverse osmosis softening equipment needs to be used to replace Ca2+and Mg2+(the main components that form scale) in the water. With the increase of Ca2+and Mg2+in the resin, the efficiency of the resin in removing Ca2+and Mg2+gradually decreases.
After the resin absorbs a certain amount of calcium and magnesium ions, it must be regenerated. The regeneration process is to rinse the resin layer with salt water in the salt tank, replacing the hardness ions on the resin. When the regenerated waste liquid is discharged from the tank, the resin returns to its softening and exchange function.
Due to the fact that the hardness of water is mainly formed by calcium and magnesium, and the principle of sodium ion exchange softening treatment is to pass the raw water through a sodium type cation exchange resin to exchange the hardness components Ca2+and Mg2+in the water with Na+in the resin, thereby adsorbing Ca2+and Mg2+in the water and softening it. If RNa is used to represent sodium type resin, the exchange process is as follows:
2RNa+Ca2+=R2Ca+2Na+
2RNa+Mg2+=R2Mg+2Na+
After water passes through a sodium ion exchanger, Ca+and Mg+in the water are replaced with Na+.
So if the hardness of the raw water is high, it will have a corrosive effect on pipelines, equipment, and water appliances, reduce their service life, and cause an increase in equipment maintenance costs.
